During the hearing of a suo motu PIL concerning Ahmedabad’s traffic regulations and infrastructure aimed at reducing accidents, Chief Justice Sunita Agarwal questioned the Amadavad Municipal Corporation (AMC) why the city roads were not repaired before the onset of the monsoon.
In response, AMC stated that road repair work is being carried out continuously across the city.
AMC also acknowledged that 29 junctions in the city require repairs, of which 15 have already been approved for work.
The AMC further stated that to curb wrong-side driving, road dividers have been installed. In addition, the construction of nine new iconic roads is underway in Ahmedabad. Due to heavy traffic movement on these roads, the AMC plans to construct foot overbridges as well.
Currently, foot overbridges have already been constructed at Hanuman Camp, Shahibaug, and the Swaminarayan Temple.
While defending its actions, AMC was reminded by the court to focus on long-term urban planning for the next 5 to 10 years.
AMC also mentioned that a budget of ₹1,200 crore has been allocated for road construction and repairs. Under this plan, 550 km of new roads and various road widening projects have been proposed.
