Gujarat Has ₹2,836.81 Crore in Unclaimed Bank Deposits; Ahmedabad Accounts for Highest Share

Despite the Central Finance Ministry’s “Your Money, Your Right” campaign nearing the completion of one year, ₹2,836.81 crore remains unclaimed in 78,62,617 bank accounts and deposit accounts across public, private and cooperative banks in Gujarat.

Ahmedabad has the highest amount of unclaimed deposits in the state, with ₹489.95 crore, followed by Surat with ₹294.47 crore, Vadodara with ₹265.97 crore, Navsari with ₹177.04 crore and Rajkot with ₹139.20 crore.

76,295 claims settled in one year

Between August 2025 and June 30, 2026, banks settled 76,295 claims after tracing account holders or their legal heirs. A total of ₹239.30 crore was disbursed, bringing the accounts under settlement.

However, officials noted that the settlement rate remains lower than expected. Several factors, including dormant accounts, a lack of coordination between government departments and district administrations, and inadequate monitoring mechanisms, have contributed to the slow progress.

Separate agenda for unclaimed deposits

The Gujarat State Level Bankers’ Committee included a separate agenda on unclaimed deposits in its June 2026 meeting. The Reserve Bank of India has also issued instructions to banks to accelerate the process of activating and settling unclaimed bank accounts.

The Finance Department of the Union government has reviewed the status of the fund and issued necessary directions. Discussions with senior bank management have also focused on improving coordination and monitoring mechanisms.

Recovery campaign continues

Under the “Tera Tujhko Arpan” initiative, efforts are being made to identify account holders and return unclaimed deposits. Despite the settlement of claims worth ₹239.30 crore in the past year, a substantial amount remains unclaimed across Gujarat’s banking system.
