Gujarat: GUVNL lags 1-3% behind the targeted purchase of pollution-free energy
Despite the considerable increase in production of solar energy, govt power companies have failed to purchase the energy
The centre has been vocal about increasing the consumption of pollution-free energy generated by solar and wind. Despite that, Gujarat Urja Vikas Nigam Ltd (GUVNL) has failed to reach the target by 1-3% and has purchased expensive, non-renewable energy that promotes pollution.
Ideally, power distribution companies should purchase around 8% of wind energy and 12% of solar energy. However, the target is under-achieved by 1-3% every year by Gujarat. Many times, less production of solar energy has been witnessed in Gujarat.
Energy production capacity
Gujarat has the capacity to produce 9,680 MW of solar energy. However, in 2018, only 1,535 MW was produced.
The production of solar energy has considerably increased in the last five years, government power companies have failed to purchase the energy.
The energy production panels are only capable of producing 25% of solar energy. Therefore, against the capacity of 9,680 MW, only 2,420 MW of electricity from solar energy is being produced.
When it comes to wind-generated electricity, the state had the capacity to produce 5,575 MW of solar energy, which increased to 10,410 MW in July 2023. However, actual capacity is only 30%, amounting to the wind-generated electricity of mere 3,500 MW.
Demands for electricity increased in the last five days
Against the capacity of 22,770 MW, total electricity production through renewable energy is merely 7,000 MW in Gujarat owing to natural factors.
Electricity generated from wind from Aug 17 to Aug 21 was 2,914 MW, 2,869 MW, 2,580 MW, 1,808 MW, and 1,702 MW.
Whereas electricity generated from solar energy was relatively less due to monsoons and cloudy weather. The solar energy generated electricity was 793 MW, 960 MW, 843 MW, 453 MW, and 584 MW during the same period.
On the other hand, electricity demands have considerably increased in these five days, from 20,882 MW to 22,470 MW.
