In the ongoing monsoon session of the Gujarat Assembly, a myriad of questions and responses have taken the centre stage.

During one such Q&A session, the energy minister of Gujarat, Kanu Desai, listed various private companies that have procured various contracts from GUVNL (Gujarat Urja Vikas Nigam Ltd) under long, medium, and short term periods.

The government has spent a substantial sum of ₹4,300 cr to private entities on long-term energy contracts.

Private companies with long-term contracts

In  long-term contracts, GUVNL acquired 16,500 million units of energy from Coastal Gujarat Power Ltd, for ₹1,481 cr, 9,000 units from Adani Power Mundra Ltd for ₹2,350 cr, 2,200 million units from ACB India for ₹235 cr, and 3,348 million units from Essar Power Ltd for one year at ₹324 cr.

However, energy rates ranging from ₹5.49 to ₹ 8.03 per unit are excluded from these prices. If these would have been added, the figures would have still gone up.

The government purchased energy on a short-term contract from Adani Enterprises, Tata Power Trading Company, PTC India, NTPC Vidyut Vyapar Nigam, Manikaran Power Limited, and Sembcorp Energy at a cost of ₹3.93 to ₹4.22 per unit.

Medium-term contract companies, including Tata Power Trading, Adani Enterprises, Sembcorp Energy, GMR Warora Energy, and Manikaran Power Limited, were paid ₹3.14 to ₹3.35 per unit.
