The Gujarat government has earned ₹7.7 crore from issuing liquor permits in Ahmedabad over the past two years, even as the number of such permits continues to rise despite prohibition in the state.

As per the state home department’s response in the Gujarat Legislative Assembly, 357 new liquor permits were issued in Ahmedabad in 2024, while the number rose to 789 in 2025. In addition, 3,790 permits were renewed in 2024 and 3,198 in 2025.

The government earned ₹3.90 crore from liquor permits in 2024 and ₹3.79 crore in 2025, taking the total revenue to ₹7.70 crore over the two-year period.

Gujarat continues to enforce prohibition, though liquor consumption is allowed under a permit system, often granted on health grounds.

The rise in permits comes amid the state government easing norms in select areas to support tourism, trade and industry. Restrictions have been relaxed in the Gujarat International Finance Tec-City (GIFT City), where controlled liquor access has been allowed.

Officials said the number of hotels and resorts permitted to serve liquor under the licensing system has also increased in recent years.
