The Gujarat government has ordered strict disciplinary action against managers of ashram schools in tribal areas for mental torture of students, expelling them from school, and against teachers taking private tuitions.

The Right to Education (RTE) norms have also been violated by these schools. After receiving numerous complaints from MLAs, party leaders, and tribal leaders, the Gujarat Tribal Development Corporation has issued strict restraining orders, including that no teacher of an ashram school will engage in private tuition or private education activities. Disciplinary action will be taken against any teacher or principal found to be violating this.

In many places, physical and mental harassment of children has been banned.

The department has issued directions that no child admitted to the school can be detained in any class until the completion of primary education.

In addition, a complete ban has been imposed on the expulsion of children.

As much as 14.86% of the total population in the state, i.e., 89 lakh tribals, live in 14 districts across Gujarat.

The state government has sanctioned 661 ashram schools to educate tribal children, of which 1.01 lakh students are enrolled annually.

Although the government provides financial assistance of ₹500 crore every year for the maintenance of these schools, numerous complaints were lodged regarding atrocities against students.

There are 545 ashram schools, 161 basic ashram schools, and 44 upper basic schools in the state.
