Gujarat govt accused of neglecting diamond artisans amid recession
Diamond artisans in Gujarat are expressing their frustration over the government’s neglect of the Ratna Kalakar Kalyan Board, established by the Congress party in 1992. The BJP, ruling government in the state, has been accused of ignoring this board and failing to deliver on promises made under the new plan they introduced in 2008, the Ratnadeep Kaushalya Vardhak Scheme, which included a ₹1,200 crore relief package during a market recession.
The diamond industry, an important sector in Gujarat, is currently facing a severe recession. Over 100 artisans have reportedly committed suicide due to financial hardships, yet the government has not taken any action to address the crisis, alleged the workers as they now face mandatory holidays and salary cuts due to reduced work.
The recession is largely due to the decision by G-7 countries, including Canada, USA, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, and the UK, to halt the purchase of Russian rough diamonds. India, which heavily relies on these diamonds for its polishing industry, is suffering losses as a result.
Gujarat State Congress President Shaktisinh Gohil criticised the BJP in a recent press conference, accusing the party of prioritising fund collection and votes over the welfare of the diamond industry. He highlighted that the BJP government is unfairly collecting business tax from labourers, who are already struggling due to the recession.
