After the monsoon season has nearly ended with Gujarat receiving over 100% of its seasonal rainfall, the government has finally moved to push rainwater harvesting works under the MLA grant scheme. A new resolution has been passed to allow 20% public contribution from MLA grants for such projects.

The resolution, issued by the General Administration Department on September 10, 2025, brings rainwater harvesting works like percolation wells, recharge of old borewells, roof water harvesting systems, and Khambhati wells under the “Janbhagidari” component of the Swarnim Jayanti Chief Minister Urban Development Scheme. These works can now be carried out in private housing societies, Housing Board colonies, and residential flats with the revised funding pattern.

Previously, only housing societies of economically weaker and backward sections were covered, with a 10% public contribution allowed from MLA grants. The new resolution revises this and extends the provision to all private housing societies, with the public contribution ceiling raised to 20%.

Officials said the move is aimed at strengthening water conservation measures in urban areas. With this step, the government expects more housing societies to adopt rainwater harvesting systems, helping recharge groundwater levels and reducing water stress in cities.
