Addressing the state assembly on Feb 21, Gujarat’s minister of state for home, Harsh Sanghavi, announced major overhauls in police administration.

The department will follow a zero-tolerance policy towards communal tensions and violent incidents. And to execute this, the state reserve police force (SRPF) group 2, Ahmedabad, has been turned into Special Action Force.

To tackle the drug inflow in the state, an NDPS cell (narcotics and drugs watchdog cell) will be formed under the CID crime, led by a superintendent of police (SP)-level officer.

Police will aim to maintain a short response time to any incident in the state - 10 minutes in urban areas and 30 minutes in rural areas. New police vehicles are to be acquired, and new staff is to be introduced to achieve it.

Emergency services from the fire brigade, ambulance, or police under ‘Dial 112’ will cover the entire state.

Sub-inspector-level police stations are to be upgraded to inspector-level in three phases through the scheme of developing high-quality research (SHODH) Yojana. An information technology (IT) expert will also be posted at every police station.

Under the Gram Suraksha Kavach Yojana, 200 outposts with head constable and assistant sub-inspector (ASI) level postings will be upgraded to police sub-inspector (PSI) levels. A police constable and a motorcycle will be allocated as well.

A highly equipped cyber unit is to be formed under the Trishul Yojana, which can deal with statewide cyber offences.

To strengthen mobility and safety structures in the metro cities of Gujarat, 1,000 new traffic police spots will be developed, and the latest gadgets will be provided under the Sugam Yojana.
