Gujarat Education Board polls: Battle between grant-in-aid and private school operators heats up

Updated: Sep 14th, 2024

As the Gujarat Education Board elections near, an internal conflict has erupted within the merged executive committee. This conflict is turning the election into a battle between grant-in-aid schools and private school operators.

The elections, scheduled for September 24, have already witnessed a turmoil. The Gujarat State School Operators Maha Mandal, formed after the merger of two long-standing committees in March, is facing a revolt from committee members. For the first time in the board’s 50-year history, a candidate has been suspended for challenging the official nominee.

Priyavadan Korat, former general secretary of the merged committee, rebelled against the officially endorsed candidate, J V Patel from the BJP’s Education Cell.

Korat, who had been a dominant force in the board’s elections for the past five terms, filed his nomination independently after being overlooked by the merged committee. His resistance to file the nomination led to an immediate suspension from the committee, marking a historic first.

The contest for the representative seat of the executive committee has heated up, with Korat receiving backing from private school operators in Surat.

As the election date approaches, all eyes will now be on how this internal conflict will shape the future governance of the Gujarat Education Board.
