Gujarat draft electoral roll published after SIR drive, over 73.73 lakh names deleted

As per the instructions of the Election Commission of India, a Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of the electoral rolls was carried out across Gujarat. The SIR drive began on October 27, 2025, and continued for nearly one and a half months across the state.

With local self-government elections approaching, the State Election Commission on Thursday (December 19) published the draft electoral roll on its official website. According to the draft roll, a total of 4.34 crore voters are currently registered in Gujarat, while 73.73 lakh names have been deleted during the revision process.

Voters whose names do not appear in the draft electoral roll can raise objections or submit claims. The objection window will remain open for one month, till January 18, 2026. Voters can verify whether their names are included in the draft roll through the official website.

During the SIR drive, Booth Level Officers (BLOs) conducted continuous door-to-door surveys across the state. Through this exercise, voters who had passed away, permanently migrated, were absent, or were registered at more than one place were identified.

Before publication of the draft electoral roll, Gujarat had a total of 5,08,43,436 registered voters. After the draft roll was published, the number dropped to 4,34,70,109, indicating that 73,73,327 names were removed during the SIR campaign.

SIR drive and controversy

It is noteworthy that the SIR campaign, launched on October 27, had landed in controversy. Amid heavy workload during the door-to-door survey, the deaths of around five Booth Level Officers were reported, triggering outrage. The State Election Commission also faced criticism over the handling of the exercise.
