Gujarat DGP Vikas Sahay retires on June 30: will he get extension or we get new top cop?

Significant changes are likely in the Gujarat Police in the coming days with the state’s senior-most IPS officer and current Director General of Police (DGP) Vikas Sahay’s tenure coming to an end on June 30.
According to the buzz in police circles, there are various possibilities. Sahay might get a three-month extension. If he is not considered for an extension, the likelihood of Ahmedabad police commissioner G S Malik getting the top post in the state is the brightest. Among the senior-most officers, Shamsher Singh is on central deputation, another 1991-batch IPS Manoj Agrawal is set to retire in September, so it is unlikely he will be appointed DGP for such a short term..
So, among the probables, the city’s top cop Malik is emerging as a strong frontrunner for the new DGP’s post. A 1993-batch experienced IPS officer, Malik has previously held key positions in the Border Security Force (BSF). He has played a crucial role in strengthening the security setup in Ahmedabad, especially during large-scale events like the rathyatra, where his leadership ensured successful and safe management.
An official announcement regarding who will take over the reins of Gujarat Police after Sahay’s retirement is expected soon.
