Gujarat Congress spokesperson Amit Nayak has been suspended for anti-party activities and using abusive language attracting charges under the Atrocities Act.
Congress spokesperson Nayak had allegedly posted a photo on social media with BJP leaders, along with an anti-party post.
The Gujarat Pradesh Congress Committee (GPCC) stated that the words used by Nayak for the Dalit community could be considered an offence under the Atrocities Act and that the disciplinary committee had also heard an audio clip containing vulgar abuses allegedly spoken by him. "The derogatory remarks made by Nayak as a Congress worker are unacceptable", said AICC secretary Ramkishan Ojha.
In another audio clip received by the disciplinary committee, there were discussions related to extortion, which has also been taken into consideration.
“Every party worker has the full right to lodge complaints with the coordination committee about any issue within the party or against any leader. However, actions that harm the party’s image by going to the media or publishing content on social media cannot be tolerated,” said a letter from Congress.
“Posting distorted photos of BJP leaders from social or public events on social media is also inappropriate. There are photos of Nayak with BJP leaders from such events, which were submitted along with the complaint to the disciplinary committee, though the committee has not considered those as part of its decision,” it added.
As per Congress, the spokesperson was suspended for reasons including–
(1) Use of words that may constitute an offence under the Atrocities Act and abusive language
(2) Telephonic conversations related to monetary negotiations
(3) Social media posts that harm the party’s image
Based on these complaints and proper scrutiny, the GPCC suspended Nayak for six years.
