Congress MP Shaktisinh Gohil resigns as Gujarat party president

Gujarat Congress leader Shaktisinh Gohil has resigned from his position as president of Gujarat Pradesh Congress Committee (GPCC) on Monday.
Soon after the defeat of Congress in Kadi and Visavadar bypolls, Gohil took to X, "I have worked hard and always endeavoured to (do) and give the best to our Party. Unfortunately, we have not succeeded today. We have lost the Visavadar and Kadi bypolls."
Announcing his resignation, Gohil wrote, "In true spirit of our Congress Party and its' glorious tradition, I have accepted moral responsibility and have resigned as Gujarat Congress President before a couple of hours. I thank all our party leaders, the excellent Babbar Sher workers of our party, my well wishers, media and all others for their support and belief in me. I believe that our party is more important than any position or individual. I will ofcourse, continue to remain a disciplined soldier of Congress. Always."
Notably, in Visavadar bypolls, the Congress lost by over 20,000 votes and in Kadi, the party tasted defeat by 39,000 votes.
Gohil was appointed president of the GPCC in June 2023, in run up to 2024 general election. He served as Minister of Finance, Health, Education, Narmada in two consecutive state governments from 1991 to 1995.
