Gujarat collected ₹4800 cr in toll taxes, but citizens forced to endure potholed roads

Updated: Aug 31st, 2024

Gujarat collected ₹4800 crore in toll taxes over the past year, but road conditions have deteriorated. Heavy rains over the past five days have caused extensive damage to roads. The condition of National Highways and State Highways is deteriorating rapidly, and in some areas, it takes up to an hour to cover just 3 kilometres. Despite the state collecting over ₹4,800 crore at tolls in the past year, citizens are struggling to drive on these severely damaged roads.

On an average, Gujarat earns over ₹13 crore daily from tolls. Despite paying such a significant amount, vehicle owners are faced with roads in terrible condition and poorly maintained bridges. Recently, a user posted a video on social media, commenting, “Even thieves rob in the dark, but the officials of the Gujarat National Highways Authority rob in broad daylight. For example, travelling just 3 kilometres from Gondal towards Rajkot takes an hour, and yet tolls have to be paid.”

This is just one example of many. The condition of most National and State Highways in Ahmedabad was already bad before the monsoon, and the rains have only worsened the situation.

Public frustration is mounting, with many experiencing severe discomfort and even health risks from travelling on these roads. Pregnant women and the elderly are particularly vulnerable. Given these conditions, there is growing debate over whether tolls should continue to be levied on roads in such disrepair.

In the financial year 2023-24, the states with the highest toll revenues are Uttar Pradesh with ₹6,995 crore, Rajasthan with ₹5,885 crore, Maharashtra with ₹5,378 crore, and Gujarat with ₹4,851 crore, in fifth place.
