The Gujarat high court (HC) dismissed a public interest litigation (PIL) on Aug 31 urging the court’s direction to implement the Gujarat government’s circular regarding the mandatory use of the Gujarati language in the state’s institutions.

The high court stated that private entities cannot be made to or ordered to incorporate Gujarati.

People cannot be forced to use Gujarati language: Guj HC

A two-judge bench consisting of chief justice of Gujarat high court Sunita Agarwal and justice Aniruddha Mayee heard a PIL on Aug 31, urging implementation of the Gujarat government’s circular, which directs mandatory usage of Gujarati in all government offices and organisations, all public and private offices, and schools across the state.

The petition mentioned that despite the government’s circular, adequate implementation is yet to be done, especially in private institutions, which is why the petition sought the high court’s orders in this matter.

However, the two-judge bench were quick to dismiss the PIL, stating that it cannot direct or force private entities to speak Gujarati through court orders.

The chief justice further stated in the court proceedings that she has observed the Gujarati language being used now in many places.

She added that she is trying to read and learn the language.

Spread public awareness about using Gujarati

The petitioner was advised by the high court that they could publicly spread awareness to use the Gujarati language.
