Guj Govt implements 50% women reservation for district panchayat presidencies

6 out of 17 jilla panchayats are to be headed by SC, ST, and OBC women president

On the completion of the two-and-a-half-year term of district panchayats (zila panchayats), the government of Gujarat issued a notification with 50% reservation for women for the presidency of district panchayats.

According to the notification, 17 district panchayats will now have women presidents from ST, SC, OBC, and general category.

One district panchayat, Botad, will have a scheduled caste (SC) woman president, three will have a scheduled tribe (ST) woman president, two will have OBC women president, whereas 11 district panchayats will have women presidents from the general category.

Following the notification, all parties, including BJP and Congress, will appoint presidents for the district panchayats for the next two and a half years. Notably, most district panchayats belong to the BJP.
