After a month of an altercation between Afghan students and a local group at Gujarat University’s boys hostel, the authorities have issued official notices to seven students from Afghanistan to vacate the hostel rooms.

The officials confirmed that five of these students had already vacated the rooms.

Why did students vacate the hostel rooms?

Seven students from Afghanistan were asked to leave the hostel by the GU authorities because they had either completed their studies or had minor pending formalities.

As per the university rules, hostel facilities are unavailable post-study. Gujarat University has about 180 foreign students presently.

Last month, a major scuffle unfolded between students from Afghanistan and locals over-performing ‘Taraweeh’, a night prayer during Ramzan, outside the hostel on Mar 16. It turned violent when a mob of 20–25 men pelted stones and damaged vehicles.

The incident drew the attention of the ministry of external affairs. After the incident, Gambian authorities paid a visit to Gujarat University. The consul general of Afghanistan in Mumbai, Zakia Wardak, also met with students and discussed the recent incident with concerned authorities.
