Groundnut oil prices have surged sharply despite stable groundnut rates in agricultural markets. In the past two days alone, prices have increased by ₹50 pushing the 15-kg tin price to a record ₹2,885–₹2,935 this year.

Compared to the same period last February, groundnut oil has become nearly 20% costlier, marking an overall rise of about ₹500 over the past year.

In agricultural produce markets, groundnut prices have remained steady between ₹1,350 and ₹1,560 per quintal. Official estimates indicate a nearly 30% rise in production this year, with output projected at around 66 lakh tonnes. Despite the higher crop yield, oil prices have continued to climb, raising concerns about speculation and profiteering, particularly amid increased demand during the wedding season.

Meanwhile, cotton prices, another major oilseed, have remained stable between ₹1,385 and ₹1,600. The Cotton Corporation of India had temporarily halted procurement at support prices from February 6, 2026, citing quality concerns, but resumed purchases following representations from farmers.

Groundnut oil is widely used for household cooking, and the continued price rise has begun to strain family budgets.
