India’s gross Goods and Services Tax (GST) collection rose 14.7% year-on-year to nearly ₹2.04 lakh crore in September 2026, according to official data released on Thursday. The collection remained above ₹2 lakh crore for the third consecutive month.

The total net GST revenue for September increased 18.1% year-on-year to ₹1,76,520 crore. Gross domestic revenue rose 10.1% to ₹1,37,996 crore from ₹1,25,334 crore in the corresponding period last year.

The September collection comprised ₹37,762 crore in Central GST (CGST), ₹45,363 crore in State GST (SGST) and ₹1,20,396 crore in Integrated GST (IGST).

Cumulative gross GST collection for the first half of the financial year 2026-27, from April to September, stood at ₹12,46,278 crore, marking an 11.6% increase year-on-year.

Gujarat’s GST Revenue Up 29% in First Half

Gujarat’s cumulative GST revenue for April-September 2026 stood at ₹49,858 crore, up 29% from ₹38,540 crore in the corresponding period of the previous financial year.

Apart from GST, the state recorded ₹2,930 crore in value-added tax (VAT), ₹1,102 crore in electricity duty and ₹24 crore in professional tax during September.

The state tax department’s total revenue from GST, VAT, electricity duty and professional tax stood at ₹12,222 crore for the month.

August Collections Also Recorded Strong Growth

In August 2026, gross GST collections rose 14.8% year-on-year to ₹1,99,853 crore, compared with ₹1,74,116 crore in August 2025.

Import-related GST revenue increased 29% to ₹62,604 crore, while domestic GST collections rose 9.3% to ₹1,37,249 crore from ₹1,25,570 crore a year earlier.

GST refunds also increased sharply, rising 67.9% year-on-year to ₹31,795 crore in August, compared with ₹18,935 crore in the same month last year.

GST Council Meeting Scheduled for October 7

The next GST Council meeting, scheduled for October 7, is expected to focus on process reforms and the implementation of recent rate rationalisation rather than major changes to GST rates, according to reports.

The Council is expected to review the implementation of rate changes over the past year. Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman has also indicated that the meeting would discuss reforms under GST 2.0, including e-invoicing and input tax credit rules.
