At the ongoing Budget Session of the Gujarat Legislative Assembly on Tuesday, the state government confirmed that the vacant Assistant Professor posts in government and grant-in-aid colleges will be filled over the next 10 years. The announcement came in response to a question raised by BJP MLA Rajendrasinh Rathva over the shortage of staff in state-run colleges.

Responding to the question, Minister for Tribal Development, Primary, Secondary and Adult Education of Gujarat, Praful Pansheriya stated that the government has planned to fill these vacant positions gradually over the next decade, but refrained from providing any specific timeline or deadline for the recruitment process.

Rathva also raised a question, specifically inquiring about the vacant positions in Chhotaudepur district. The minister revealed that the district has three government colleges with a total of 26 sanctioned Assistant Professor posts, but only 6 posts have been filled in an in-charge capacity, leaving 20 positions vacant. In addition, four grant-in-aid colleges in the district have 55 sanctioned posts, out of which only two positions are vacant.

Additionally, Patan MLA Kirit Patel asked how long these positions have remained vacant and inquired about the recruitment process for sports officers and librarians. Pansheriya responded by stating that the government has introduced a 10-year recruitment calendar, ensuring that the vacancies will be filled gradually as per the roster system.

Several education experts and opposition leaders have criticised the 10-year recruitment plan, stating that delaying appointments will further deteriorate the education system and affect students’ future. They have urged the government to expedite the hiring process and fill the vacant posts at the earliest.
