In a first-of-its-kind technology-driven security initiative, the Ahmedabad Police will deploy GPS tracking devices, 360-degree cameras and sound-monitoring systems on all 18 elephants participating in the annual Rath Yatra to closely monitor their movement and ensure public safety.

The advanced surveillance measures have been introduced to minimise the risk of untoward incidents involving elephants during the religious procession, which attracts lakhs of devotees every year.

According to officials, each elephant's ambadi (howdah) will be fitted with a GPS tracker capable of transmitting its real-time location directly to the police control room. The system will immediately alert security personnel if an elephant deviates from its designated route or displays unusual movement patterns.

In addition to GPS tracking, every elephant will also be equipped with a 360-degree camera, enabling police officials to monitor the surroundings continuously throughout the procession. The live video feed will be transmitted directly to the police control room, allowing officers to keep a close watch on crowd movement and the behaviour of the elephants.

Authorities are also installing sound-level monitoring devices on the ambadis to measure ambient noise during the procession. Officials believe that monitoring excessive noise levels will help assess factors that could potentially agitate or distress the elephants amid the large crowds.

Police said all 18 elephants participating in the Rath Yatra will be covered under the new monitoring system as part of enhanced security arrangements for this year's event.

Speaking about the initiative, Crime Branch Police Inspector D.K. Thakar said the integration of GPS tracking, live camera feeds and sound-monitoring technology would enable police to respond swiftly to any unusual situation and strengthen overall security management during the Rath Yatra.

The technology-assisted surveillance forms part of Ahmedabad Police's broader strategy to ensure the smooth and safe conduct of the Rath Yatra while enhancing crowd management and animal safety during one of Gujarat's largest religious processions.
