On one hand, Gujarat promotes itself as being a pollution-free state, on the other hand, the reality holds a stark image. However, these loud claims deafen the reality of industrial pollution taking place. Even when the pollution levels have reached dangerously high, the Gujarat Pollution Control Board (GPCB) has taken no considerable action against the offenders.
Despite the High Court’s order, GPCB does not take action
GPCB issued 3323 show-cause notices to factories. Out of which, a decision has not been made on the 965 factories so far while steps have been taken against only four factories till date.
Air and water pollution in Gujarat is experiencing a constant rise. Even after flushing crores, the waters of many rivers in Gujarat, including Ahmedabad’s Sabarmati, remain impure. Meanwhile, the air quality in the cities has also deteriorated.
Questions have been raised about the functioning of the GPCB as the condition has come down to this. According to union environment minister Bhupendra Yadav, 33,486 factories have been registered in Gujarat, out of which 4605 have violated environmental regulations. The central environment department also stated that closure notices were given to 313 factories in Gujarat.
