Gold jewellery worth over ₹3 lakh stolen from passenger aboard Sabarmati Express

A passenger travelling on the Sabarmati Express from Ahmedabad to Darbhanga was robbed of gold jewellery worth over ₹3.6 lakh shortly after the train departed from Ahmedabad railway station, according to a complaint filed with the Ahmedabad Railway Police.
The incident took place in the early hours of May 1, within 5 minutes of the train’s departure. The complainant, Shivjeevan Jha, a 67-year-old garment factory worker from Amraiwadi, Ahmedabad, had boarded train number 19165, the Darbhanga Sabarmati Express, with his wife and relatives. The family was en route to attend a wedding in their native village, Dherukh, in Bihar’s Darbhanga district.
Jha had reserved seats in coaches S5 and S2, and was seated on berth number 57 in coach S5. Due to the rush of passengers, the coach was reportedly overcrowded. The complainant had stored a red wallet containing the wedding jewellery in the front pocket of his light grey trousers. Around 12.05 am, just minutes after the train left Ahmedabad, he noticed that the front pocket of his trousers had been discreetly slit and the wallet was missing.
The stolen wallet contained two gold chains worth ₹2.85 lakh, gold earrings (4 gms) valued at ₹28,000, bangle worth ₹13,000 and a gold ring worth ₹42,000. The total value of the stolen jewellery amounts to an estimated ₹3.68 lakh.
Upon realising the theft, Jha and his wife got down at the next stop, Maninagar railway station, and complained to the Ahmedabad Railway Police. Railway Police officials are examining CCTV footage from Ahmedabad railway station and have begun questioning potential witnesses to identify the unknown perpetrator. No arrests have been made so far.
