Godhra’s former dy municipal commissioner among 9 sentenced in decade-old assault case

A court in Panchmahal’s Godhra has sentenced nine individuals, including Sunil Lalwani, the former deputy municipal commissioner of the BJP-ruled municipality, and Suresh Derai, the vice-chairman of the Red Cross Society, to four years of simple imprisonment in connection with a decade-old assault case that took place in the city’s Station Road area.
Following the conviction, all the accused were arrested and sent to Vadodara jail.
On the night of May 28, 2014, a group of individuals arrived in vehicles in front of a property located opposite the B Division police station.
They got into an altercation with Satish Harwani, who was present at the scene. Subsequently, the group attacked Harwani with weapons and sticks. They also issued death threats and used abusive language before fleeing.
A complaint was filed in this regard at the B Division police station. The case was tried in the court of Chief Judicial Magistrate (CJM) and Additional Senior Civil Judge Jignesh Damodra, who found all the accused guilty and sentenced them to imprisonment.
