Following incidents involving fake doctors, the Gujarat Medical Council (GMC) has announced that doctors with foreign degrees must now register to practice in Gujarat.

Doctors who hold a Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) from abroad are required to specify only MBBS. They cannot claim to have an MD in Physiology or a Doctor of Medicine, as this misleads patients.

The GMC has issued a notice stating that foreign medical graduates must use their official MBBS designation on prescriptions, business cards, letterheads, and other documents. If they fail to comply, their medical licenses could be revoked.

Additionally, all allopathic doctors must include their GMC-issued license number on prescriptions, letterheads, and medical certificates. They are also required to obtain a GMC license to practice in Gujarat, even if they hold a Medical Council of India (MCI) or National Medical Commission (NMC) registration from another state.

Some specialists in Gujarat only have an MBBS registration with the GMC, but they must urgently register their super-specialty degrees as well. Failure to do so may result in their licenses being suspended.
