The traditional Leeli Parikrama of Mount Girnar, performed by lakhs of devotees every year, has been suspended due to heavy rainfall in the region.

The authorities took the decision keeping in mind the safety of pilgrims after frequent unseasonal rains severely damaged the parikrama route.

Officials said the path around the holy hills has been washed away on several stretches, making it unsafe for devotees to walk through the forest terrain. The suspension will remain in force until weather conditions improve and the route is restored.

The final decision was taken at a joint meeting between the local administration and Girnar’s priests, where it was unanimously agreed that risking the lives of devotees would not be appropriate.

Symbolic parikrama to preserve tradition

Despite the suspension, spiritual leaders have decided to carry out a symbolic parikrama to preserve the sanctity and continuity of the ancient tradition.

The ritual will begin with a muhurat on November 1, followed by a symbolic circumambulation on November 2, which will only include priests. No general devotees will be allowed on the route during this period.

The Leeli Parikrama is traditionally held every year between Kartik Sud Agiyaras and Poonam, during which lakhs of devotees trek through the forests surrounding Girnar.
