Industrial activity in Ankleshwar GIDC has been impacted following a reported cut of up to 50% in gas supply, amid the ongoing tensions in Gulf regions. The reduction has created operational challenges for several units dependent on gas-based boiler systems.

Ankleshwar GIDC, which houses over 1,200 small and medium-scale industries, is witnessing disruptions in production, with some units operating at reduced capacity while others have been forced to partially shut operations. The situation is expected to have a bearing on employment, with over one lakh workers linked to these industries.

To address the shortage, the Gujarat Pollution Control Board has permitted the use of liquid fuels as an alternative. However, since these fuels are petroleum-based, they come at a significantly higher cost, making them less viable for many units, particularly in the MSME segment.

Industry sources indicate that the current situation has led to three key challenges including rising production costs, delays in fulfilling orders, and reduced competitiveness in international markets.

Industrial stakeholders have put forward several demands, including rebalancing of gas supply, faster and simplified approvals for alternative fuels, and temporary relaxation in environmental compliance norms.

There is also a suggestion to promote alternatives such as bio-coal and develop waste-to-energy models as a long-term solution.
