Gas has been discovered in the Arabian Sea off the Khambhat coast of Gujarat.

Cairn Oil & Gas announced the discovery.

It was found at the Ambe-2A appraisal well in the Ambe block, located in the Cambay Basin, and has been formally notified to the Directorate General of Hydrocarbons (DGH) and the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas.

The gas was encountered in a reservoir beneath the main gas-bearing zone within the Miocene–Tarkeshwar formation.

The Ambe block (CB/OSDSF/AMBE/2021) is Cairn’s second Discovered Small Field (DSF) asset to be taken up for monetisation, following the earlier development of the Hazarigaon field in Northeast India.

Notably, this is the first DSF block on India’s west coast to move towards monetisation.

Detailed appraisal studies to evaluate the field’s development potential is underway by preparing a comprehensive field development plan. As part of its shallow-water drilling and development campaign, the company plans to drill two additional wells in continuation of ongoing operations.

The Ambe block spans an area of 728.19 sq km and was awarded to Cairn in September 2022 under the DSF-III bidding round.
