Gandhinagar medical college ragging case: 7 senior students suspended for 2 years, others for 6 months

A case of ragging has surfaced at GMERS Medical College in Gandhinagar, prompting Gujarat’s education department to take immediate action. Seven third-year students involved in the incident have been suspended for two years, while several second-year students have been suspended for six months.
The college falls under the Gujarat Medical Education and Research Society of Department of Health and Family Welfare, Government of Gujarat.
The issue came to light after the hostel dean received a formal complaint from first-year MBBS students. Subsequently, the college administration examined CCTV footage from the boys’ hostel. The footage showed third- and second-year students mentally harassing a first-year student.
Terming the behaviour “severely unethical and unacceptable”, Gujarat’s Education Minister Praful Panseriya confirmed that all students found guilty have been suspended.
The administration has suspended seven third-year students for two years and imposed a six-month suspension on the remaining second-year students. They have also been warned to reform their behaviour immediately.
The incident unfolded when the new batch completed their admission process and moved into the hostel, a group of second and third-year seniors allegedly called first-year students for an “introduction session”. During this session, seniors reportedly made insulting comments and subjected them to mental harassment.
Following this, several first-year MBBS students filed a written complaint with the college authorities. An investigation revealed involvement of around 14 senior students. Their parents were summoned, and the administration decided on suspensions ranging from six months to two years, ensuring minimal disruption to academics while enforcing strict disciplinary action.
