Fuel, LPG shortage deepens amid Israel-Iran conflict, inflation hits households and industries

As tensions between Israel and Iran continue to escalate, the ripple effects are being felt far beyond the conflict zone, with fuel and cooking gas shortages beginning to impact daily life in India.

The situation has led to a sharp rise in prices of essential commodities, putting significant financial strain on households across income groups.

The shortage of petrol and cooking gas has triggered a surge in inflation, affecting everything from tea and edible oil to medicines and basic food items.

With incomes remaining limited and expenses rising steadily, many families are finding it increasingly difficult to manage their monthly budgets.

Adding to the pressure, the price of commercial LPG cylinders has been increased by ₹200. This hike has directly impacted small food vendors, tea stalls, and the hotel and restaurant industry, forcing many to raise prices.

From local eateries to full-service restaurants, the cost of meals, including traditional thalis, has gone up. In some cases, reports suggest commercial cylinders are being sold in the black market at prices as high as ₹6,000, raising concerns among business owners about sustainability.

The impact is also visible in public food services, including hostels, mess facilities, and community kitchens, where rising fuel costs are affecting operations. Over the past month, edible oil prices alone have increased by more than ₹300, further burdening consumers.

For middle- and lower-income groups, the situation is becoming increasingly difficult. Rising expenses have made it harder for many to keep up with loan repayments.

At the same time, the cost of medicines for conditions such as liver and kidney ailments, blood pressure, diabetes, and anaemia has also increased, adding to the financial stress.

Transportation costs have also risen due to higher fuel prices and increased highway toll rates. This is expected to further push up the cost of essential goods in the coming days.

Industries are also feeling the heat of rising input costs. The increase in commercial gas prices has made materials such as plastic, steel, and ceramics more expensive.

Farmers are likely to face higher costs for essential supplies like pipes, while reports of fertiliser shortages have begun to emerge.

In regions like Saurashtra, industries including marble, brass parts, ceramics, and textiles are witnessing a slowdown. Several units have reportedly shut down.
