As part of a decision made last year in 2024 to provide free transportation services to government school students, the scheme will now be extended beyond primary schools to include students studying in government and grant-aid secondary schools.

Under this initiative by the education department, 1.66 lakh students will benefit from transportation services to travel from home to school. Students whose schools are located more than 5 km away from their homes will be eligible for this transportation scheme.

To help students of government and grant-aid secondary and higher secondary schools commute, the education department offers a student concession pass for travel on Gujarat State Road Transport Corporation (GSRTC) buses. Additionally, school transportation is provided to a limited number of students in primary and secondary government schools based on distance norms.

To encourage students to complete their studies up to Class 12, the scope of this scheme is being expanded to include transportation support for those studying in government and grant-aid secondary and higher secondary schools. Applications will be accepted at the district and municipal corporation level by May 7, with approvals finalised by May 12.

Who can avail this service?

Schools will be responsible for ensuring that there is no duplication of benefits under this and any other central or state government schemes. Only students who have secured admission in the nearest government or grant-aid secondary or higher secondary school located more than 5 km away from their residence will be eligible for the scheme.
