Four Sabarmati Central Jail inmates booked for assaulting staff, hurling bricks inside prison

Four inmates lodged at the Sabarmati Central Jail have been booked for allegedly assaulting jail personnel, hurling bricks at staff members and threatening to kill them during a violent disturbance inside the prison premises on Tuesday.

According to Ranip police, the incident took place around 11 am inside the Subedar Box and jail hospital area of the old Sabarmati Central Jail complex.

Bharatbhai Rajshibhai Chavda, stated that he has been serving as a jail havaldar at the prison for the past one-and-a-half years and was on duty in Bada Chakkar Yard No. 4 between 6 am and 1 pm on the day of the incident.

Police have identified the accused as Sangramsinh Shikarwar, Satish alias Satio Vitthalbhai Patni, Hasmukh alias Popat Hadiyol and Ankit Ramnaresh Lodhi, all of whom were lodged in the Chhota Chakkar Yard of the prison.

As per the complaint, jail staff rushed to the Subedar Box after hearing a commotion and found the inmates allegedly abusing and fighting with prison personnel. During the altercation, one of the accused allegedly picked up a brick from a nearby garden area and injured himself on the head, while other prisoners also attempted to harm themselves.

One inmate, identified as Satish alias Satio, sustained injuries to his hand during the scuffle and was subsequently taken to the jail hospital for treatment along with the other accused and prison staff members.

However, while treatment was underway, the four inmates allegedly came out of the hospital in an agitated state and began verbally abusing the staff members sitting outside the facility. They allegedly assaulted the personnel and threatened them, saying they would “kill” them once outside the jail premises.

Additional jail staff rushed to the spot after hearing the commotion, following which the accused allegedly picked up bricks, broke them into pieces and hurled them at prison staff and guards. The inmates were also accused of attempting to create panic inside the jail and challenge prison authorities during the disturbance.

One of the accused, Satish alias Satio, who suffered serious injuries to his hand, was later shifted to Civil Hospital Asarwa for further treatment, where he remains under medical care.

Based on the complaint, Ranip Police registered an offence under various sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023, including charges related to assault, rioting, criminal intimidation and obstruction of public servants in discharge of duty.
