The Vastrapur Police Station has registered a case after a non-viable male foetus, estimated to be around four months old, was found abandoned on a public road near Pujan Multispeciality Hospital in the Memnagar area of Ahmedabad during the early hours of Wednesday.

According to police, they received a PCR message around 12.05 am on May 6 about a foetus lying near Subhash Chowk, opposite Pujan Hospital and adjacent to Gokul Apartment in Memnagar.

The police officer who was on night patrol duty with PCR-07, rushed to the spot after receiving the alert. Upon reaching the location, they found the foetus lying in an unclaimed condition on the roadside.

Police said medical personnel from a 108 ambulance service present at the spot informed them that the foetus appeared to be approximately four to five months old and was already dead when discovered.

The body was later shifted to Sola Civil Hospital, where a postmortem examination was conducted. The medical report identified the deceased as a “non-viable male foetus around four months old”.

Police conducted inquiries in the surrounding area to trace the parents or guardians of the foetus, but no claimant could be identified. Investigators suspect that the foetus was abandoned by a woman in an attempt to conceal the birth, resulting in the death of the unborn child.

Vastrapur police have registered an offence under Section of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), 2023, against an unidentified woman.

Officials said statements of ambulance staff, local residents and other witnesses would be recorded as part of the probe.
