Closer to its bid to become a self-sufficient semiconductor country, India marked the establishment of two semiconductor facilities, one in Gujarat’s Dholera and another in Morigaon, Assam today.

The facilities include a semiconductor fabrication plant in Dholera and a Semiconductor Assembly and Test (OSAT) Facility in Jagiroad, Morigaon, Assam.

Dholera’s semiconductor plant

The Gujarat plant, with a collaboration between Tata Sons Pvt Ltd and Powerchip Semiconductor Manufacturing Corporation (PSMC) of Taiwan, is worth ₹91,000 crore and will generate over 20,000 direct and indirect jobs.

“Today is indeed a special day for the Tata Group – with the foundation stone being laid simultaneously for our projects in Dholera and Jagiroad 2,500 km apart. These semiconductor manufacturing hubs will have a lasting impact on the entire nation. The ecosystem from across the globe will mobilise to have India as their preferred semiconductor destination,” said N Chandrasekaran, chairman, Tata Sons, speaking at the occasion.

Speaking about the manufacturing of semiconductor wafers, Chandrasekaran said, “The plant, offering a number of opportunities and jobs, will change this part of the world. It has a capacity of creating 28 nm semiconductor chips, all the way up to 110 nm.”

This plant will manufacture 50,000 semiconductor wafers monthly, according to Chandrasekaran. “We aim to achieve commercial production by late 2025 to early 2026. Down the line, we also plan to expand our horizons.”

Talking about the utilisation of the product, he said, “Sectors including automotive, computing and data storage, wireless communication, and artificial intelligence, will use these chips.

“The aim was to create a world-class facility, keeping in mind the use of AI for the operations,” he said.

Semiconductor Assembly and Test (OSAT) Facility in Assam

In Assam, the OSAT facility boasts of an investment worth ₹27,000 cr, and according to Tata Sons, the facility is likely to create 27,000 direct and indirect jobs.

The OSAT facilities allow for the testing, assembling, and packaging in the semiconductor value chain.

The facilities, involving semiconductor technology, advanced skill and talent, will help India initiate its own semiconductor ecosystem, with a vision to create over 1,00,000 skilled jobs.

“The day is not far when India will become a global power in the manufacture of products for the semiconductor sector,” PM Modi noted, who virtually laid the foundation for the facilities.

“There is a huge presence of Indian talent in global chip design and manufacturing. Therefore, the talent ecosystem of India is completed as the nation moves forward in the semiconductor manufacturing sector,” he told the gathering.
