Flower prices soar in Ahmedabad ahead of Diwali as festive demand drives rates up

Flower prices across the city have surged sharply, doubling in some markets ahead of Diwali. Marigold prices, which usually range between ₹200 to ₹225 per kilogram, have now touched ₹400 per kg, while rose prices have soared to as high as ₹600 per kg.
Retailers say that along with marigold and rose, other flowers too have seen a 25% price rise compared to last year. The steep increase has also pushed up the cost of puja materials, which are now selling for over ₹200 per set.
Traders allege that wholesale dealers engaged in stockpiling flowers before Diwali, buying them cheaply and then inflating prices during the festive days. In the wholesale market, marigold was sold at ₹225 per kg and roses at ₹400 per kg, forcing retailers to hike their rates further.
As a result, the general public has been hit by the sudden price surge, paying nearly double for flowers traditionally used in Diwali decorations and religious rituals.
