In a major seizure ahead of the annual rathyatra, the Local Crime Branch (LCB) of Ahmedabad Zone-2 arrested five women late Thursday night for illegally transporting 442 bottles and cans of Indian-made foreign liquor (IMFL), worth ₹45,555, without any valid pass or permit. The seizure was made near Pillar No. 395 at the end of the Ranip Metro Line.

Acting on a tip-off around 11.05 pm on June 19, a team of LCB officers and female police personnel from Ranip police station laid a trap near Prabodh Raval Bridge.

Five women — identified as Babyben Anilbhai Chunara (51), Ashaben Maheshbhai Chunara (49), Manjuben Jhaverbhai Chunara (45), Roshniben Vikasbhai Chunara (24), and Mariabanu Mohsin Mansuri (30) — were found standing in a public area with large cloth bags. Upon inspection, the team discovered a stash of IMFL comprising:

  • 108 bottles of whisky
  • 249 bottles of vodka
  • 85 canned beer

The liquor was reportedly sourced from Rajasthan and brought into Gujarat illegally. The accused admitted to purchasing the alcohol from a shop in Rajasthan, travelling by government bus, and alighting near the RTO Circle in Ahmedabad before being apprehended.

All five women were arrested on the spot, and a seizure was made under various sections of the Gujarat Prohibition Act. No further contraband was found on the women during their body search conducted by female officers. The women failed to produce permits or a satisfactory explanation for transporting such a large quantity of liquor.
