A farmer ‘Mahapanchayat’ took place in Junagadh on Friday featuring the state’s and nationwide farmer organisations.
The convention, organised by the Sanyukt Kisam Morcha (SKM), took place in Keshod taluka’s Bamnasa village.
The meet concluded with a unanimous resolution, calling for farmers to end their internal caste dynamics, and elect strong leaders to address the farmer issues.
The farmers questioned the government’s discrepancy over several issues, including weed problem, green drought, eco sensitive zone, agriculture packages, and land measurement errors, among others.
National leader for farmers’ rights, Yodendra Yadav, and wrestler-turned Congress leader Bajrang Punia, among others, were present at the event.
Yogendra Yadav, highlighting the government’s shortcomings at the meet, stated, “The BJP came to power by selling the ‘Gujarat Model’. However, when we investigated its reality and what kind of development Gujarat really has, we found the state’s development to be entirely hollow.”
Citing a few examples, Yadav added to his criticism, saying, “The BJP promotes the Pradhan Mantri Fasal Bima Yojana across India, yet a ground-reality check in Gujarat has revealed that the scheme was discontinued here four years ago, and millions owed to farmers still remain unpaid.”
He emphasised that farmers in Gujarat, along with those across the country, need to develop a new model for their own welfare. Issues such as weed growth, he adds, will become the centre of the national farmers’ movement.
Wrestler Bajrang Punia also voiced criticism, remarking, “Farmers’ crops are suffering major damage due to government negligence. Years ago, issues such as weed growth didn’t exist. But now, government inaction is harming the region. People, especially farmers, are highly undervalued in Gujarat, while cattle is protected by the government. They remember farmers only during the elections. This mahapanchayat will unite and mobilise the farmers, and will serve as a wake-up call for the government.”
