Farmers in Gujarat paid below MSP for groundnut
Updated: Nov 7th, 2024
Despite a good sowing, irregular rainfall has damaged the groundnut harvest in Gujarat. In some areas, farmers have reported losses of up to 40%, or even as high as 50% in certain regions.
This has resulted in groundnut being sold at prices below the Minimum Support Price (MSP), which is ₹1,356 per 20 kg. Most of the groundnuts in the market are priced between ₹1,140 and ₹1,350. Only a few high-quality groundnuts fetch prices in the range of ₹1,351 to ₹1,505.
The supply of groundnuts started in early October, but many traders initially argued that the groundnuts were damaged due to moisture and humidity, and took advantage of this by buying them from farmers at much lower prices — around ₹1,100 per 20 kg.
B K Kikani, the former vice chancellor of Junagadh Agricultural University, noted that areas like Rajkot and Surendranagar saw less damage, and some farmers even experienced bumper crops. However, in the worst-hit areas, including Junagadh, Amreli, and Porbandar, heavy rains and lack of sunlight have caused substantial damage, resulting in much lower yields this year.
According to the sources, the government has announced plans to purchase about 9.98 lakh metric tonnes of groundnut at the MSP rate.
