Ahmedabad Cyber Crime Police arrested a man from Kishangarh, Rajasthan for creating fake social media accounts of politicians and government officials to cheat people looking for work-from-home jobs.

The accused, identified as Sarmin alias Kallu Aslam Meo, used these fake accounts to offer Natraj pencil box packing jobs and extorted money from unsuspecting victims.

He created as many as 47 fake social media accounts.

He even impersonated prominent figures like IPS officer Safin Hasan, Dr Lavina Sinha, Haresh Dudhat, Shamsher Singh, former MLA Bhushan Bhatt, and a few IAS officers.

The police investigation revealed that Sarmin operated with an accomplice who helped him obtain fake SIM cards and contact potential targets. They have also been nabbed by the police.

Their scam was operational on a large scale in Ahmedabad, with the accused using a picture of Vejalpur MLA Amit Thaker to lure victims into a fake work opportunity of packing pencils.

Following a tip-off and technical surveillance, the Cyber Crime team apprehended Meo, and are currently conducting further investigations to identify his entire network and the total number of people he has defrauded.
