Ex-TRB jawan booked for drunk driving after causing pile-up crash in Nikol
In a late-night incident that sparked chaos in the Nikol area of Ahmedabad, a former Traffic Reserve Battalion (TRB) jawan, identified as Rahul Singh Vinod Singh Rajput (26), was arrested for allegedly driving under the influence of alcohol and ramming into multiple vehicles near Das Khaman junction.
Rajput's white Maruti Swift collided with three vehicles and a roadside snack cart around 2 am on Tuesday. The car reportedly had three to four passengers during the incident. Miraculously, no casualties were reported.
When police arrived at the scene, they discovered liquor bottles inside the vehicle, along with a dashboard display board labelled ‘Police’. The collision and subsequent investigation drew large crowds of onlookers to the site.
The accused, a resident of Thakkarnagar, Nikol, was found heavily intoxicated and unable to stand steadily, according to Head Constable Ranjitdan Aydan of the ‘I’ Division traffic police station, who filed the complaint. Officers observed a strong smell of alcohol in Rajput’s breath, along with red eyes and erratic behaviour. When questioned, Rajput admitted to drinking but failed to produce a valid liquor permit.
Eyewitnesses and two local panch witnesses confirmed the erratic driving and the sequence of the crashes, and the entire accident was captured in CCTV footage. The Swift, valued at approximately ₹1 lakh, was seized by police on the spot, and Rajput was arrested around 3.15 am.
During interrogation, it emerged that Rajput is a former TRB constable, adding a disturbing dimension to the case given his prior association with law enforcement.
A case has been registered under various sections of the Motor Vehicles Act for drunk driving and of the Gujarat Prohibition Act for illegal possession and consumption of alcohol. Further investigation into the case is underway, led by the ‘I’ Division traffic police.
