Entry only for confirmed ticket holders at select Gujarat, Mumbai stations

The Western Railway has sent a proposal to the Railway Board to implement this access control system at 12 major stations in Mumbai and Gujarat.
Through this system, only passengers with a confirmed ticket will be allowed to enter the station premises after their ticket is scanned.
In Gujarat, the proposal includes Kalupur station in Ahmedabad, along with Asarwa and Sabarmati stations.
Other stations listed are Vadodara, Surat, Vapi, and Udhna.
Currently, Indian Railways is undertaking redevelopment projects at several stations across the country. The idea is to end the current practice where anyone can freely access station platforms and replace it with an access-controlled system.
Which Mumbai Stations are included?
The stations in Mumbai listed in the proposal include Borivali, Andheri, and Bandra Terminus. Among these, Borivali and Bandra Terminus serve trains to and from Gujarat. Andheri, on the other hand, is a major hub on the Western Line of Mumbai’s local train network and also serves as an interchange with metro services.
Due to past incidents of overcrowding at stations like Udhna, it is being considered to restrict station entry to only passengers with confirmed tickets.
A railway official stated that this proposal is still in the preliminary stage. Only a list of stations has been sent to the Railway Board. If approved, infrastructure changes will be made at the selected stations. Entry and exit points will be clearly defined, and scanners will be installed at these locations.
Passengers will be allowed to enter the station premises only after scanning their tickets. This is expected to reduce platform congestion and improve safety and cleanliness at stations.
Currently, when crowd-related incidents occur, railways temporarily halt the sale of platform tickets at major stations. However, with the proposed confirmed-ticket-only entry system, such temporary restrictions might no longer be needed in the future.
