Emergency cases spike during Navratri, festivities turn bitter for many

Gujarat was swept up in a wave of celebration for the nine days of Navratri, however, for some, a few unfortunate incidents put a damper on the festive spirit during those joyful nights.
3,475 major emergency cases in Gujarat
During these nine days of revelry, Gujarat registered a total of 3,475 cases of heart emergencies, injuries due to vehicular accidents, and breathing problems during Navratri, state figures from the statewide 108 ambulance services.
These cases were registered during the peak hours of garba which was roughly from 6 p.m. to 2 a.m.
Out of the total calls received, 766 were for heart emergencies, 1,826 were for injuries caused by road accidents, while 883 were for respiratory problems. These three were the most notable calls for emergency during Navratri.

Most cases on last day of Navratri
On Oct 23, the last day of Navratri, saw the highest number of emergency calls at 418 calls made for the three most notable causes.
While, the total number of 1,541 overall emergency cases were registered on Oct 23, which was also the highest to have been recorded during any of the Navratri days.
Surge in accident emergencies
Generally, the ambulance services receive 171 calls for accident-related injuries from 6 p.m. to 2 a.m. every day. This number shot up to 203 daily calls during these nine days. This accounts for an 18.45% surge.
Similarly, a surge in calls for diseases like diabetes was also observed. The daily number of cases went up from 16 cases a day to 19 cases a day.
Emergencies in Ahmedabad
Ahmedabad, however, saw a significant enough drop in emergency calls during Navratri, as the daily numbers decreased from 313 to 291. However, the last day of Navratri saw 315 calls for emergencies.
201 cases of heart-related emergencies, 323 cases of accident-related injuries, and 284 cases of respiratory problems were registered during the Navratri festival in Ahmedabad.
