After a few rounds of heavy rain in Gujarat, temperatures lowered in the state, resulting in lower demands of electricity- up to 15,000 MW.
To ease the burden of the consumers, the Gujarat Urja Vikas Nigam Ltd (GUVNL) may purchase electricity at lower rates of around ₹3.5 to ₹4 per unit from the Indian Energy Exchange (IEX).
IEX is providing electricity at ₹3.5 to ₹4 per unit during peak hours and at ₹2.5 to ₹3 per unit during non-peak hours.
GUVNL ordered to pause electricity production
Since Gujarat’s power plants were producing electricity at higher costs, GUVNL ordered the Gujarat State Electricity Corporation Ltd (GSECL) to stop the production of electricity at multiple plants in the state.
Electricity production at two out of three plants with capacity of 630 MW in Gandhinagar were stopped on July 31. The plant is producing 26.2% of its electricity as of now.
Two out of the four plants at the Ukai thermal power station, which produces 1,110 MW of electricity, have stopped production. However, Ukai’s hydroelectricity plant, with 300 MW of capacity, is 96.7% active.
Two plants working on imported coal at Jamnagar’s Sikka have been stopped. Both these plants were operating at higher costs. Four out of eight plants with a capacity of 2,270 MW at Wanakbori have also been stopped.
Even low-cost lignite-run plants have stopped
Three power plants out of four at Kutch Lignite Thermal Power Station (KLTPS) and Bhavnagar Lignite Thermal Power Station (BLTPS) have paused production.
Dhuvaran’s three electricity plants with 595 MW of capacity have been put on hold as well.
Three out of four hydroelectric plants in Kadana with a capacity of 240 MW, have been stopped. Only one of them is running on 14.2% capacity.
As a result of high atmospheric wind speeds, the state has generated 3,465 MW of electricity. On the contrary, solar power production has decreased to 727 MW.
