Elderly woman, son jump into Sabarmati in Ahmedabad, bodies recovered

A 73-year-old woman and her son died by suicide after jumping into the Sabarmati river in Ahmedabad on Saturday, police said. Their bodies were recovered near the Vallabh Sadan boating point along the Sabarmati Riverfront.
The deceased have been identified as Pravinaben Pandya and her son Jagdish. According to preliminary information, the mother and son together took the fatal plunge into the river for reasons yet to be ascertained.
Police said a security guard deployed at the riverfront spotted the bodies floating in the water and immediately alerted the rescue team and the police. Personnel from the Ahmedabad Fire and Emergency Services rushed to the spot and retrieved both bodies from the river.
The bodies were later sent to a government hospital for post-mortem examination to ascertain the exact cause and time of death, officials said.
The Riverfront West Police Station has registered a case of accidental death and initiated further investigation. Police are examining CCTV footage from the area and speaking to family members to determine the circumstances that led to the incident.
