In yet another case of chain-snatching and mobile theft in broad daylight, a 61-year-old woman was robbed of valuables worth ₹42,000 while travelling in an Uber autorickshaw near Chimanbhai Bridge in Sabarmati on the morning of July 19.

The complainant, Harshidaben Jani, a resident of Swati Krishnanta Society in Shela village, was en route to Sabarmati Dharamnagar railway station to board a train to Patan when the incident occurred. According to the FIR filed with the local police, the robbery took place around 6.30 am, when her autorickshaw was momentarily halted in traffic near Torrent Power House.

As per Harshidaben’s account, two unidentified men riding a black Activa scooter approached the autorickshaw from behind. One of them, described as wearing black trousers and a white shirt, reached into the vehicle and snatched her purse from the back seat. The registration number of the scooter could not be noted due to the suddenness of the act.

The stolen purse contained four gold rings weighing around one tola (estimated at ₹30,000), a mobile phone (worth ₹5,000), and approximately ₹7,000 in cash, bringing the total loss to around ₹42,000.

The Uber autorickshaw driver and the police are listed as witnesses in the case. Based on her statement, the police have registered an offence under theft and robbery sections and have begun scanning CCTV footage from the vicinity for leads.

A complaint was lodged with the Sabarmati police in this regard on Wednesday. No arrests have been made so far, and investigations are ongoing.
