Eight people have been arrested by the Devbhumi Dwarka police in the recent case of the alcoholic syrup racket being busted from Silvassa. These ‘white collared bootleggers’ found out legal loopholes and tried to make fast money out of it.

The cough syrup bottles produced in Dadra and Nagar Haveli, were being sold on the streets of Saurashtra.

The  eight arrested include vendors, wholesale dealers, manufacturers, syrup company managers, among others.

Alcoholic syrup nexus busted

A package of alcoholic ayurvedic syrup being sold by two local vendors was recently seized from Okha by Devbhumi Dwarka police. On delving deeper, an organised nexus across Saurashtra was unravelled.

The police investigation was led by Nitesh Pandey, superintendent of police, Devbhumi Dwarka. Police sources revealed that an individual named Sanjay Shah, had set up a production unit named HarBoglobal Pharmaceuticals Ltd. (HBG) in Silvassa. Medicines were manufactured with the formulation of Amit Vasavada, a person who had no prior knowledge about ayurvedic medicines, was in charge of production of this Ayurvedic medicine.

The eight arrested in this case are Nilesh Casta, Virendrasinh Jadeja, Arjunsinh Jadeja, Divyarajsinh Jadeja, Sunil Kakkadr, Aamod Bhave, Bhavik Presswala, and Amit Vasavda.

The ones absconding in this case include the prime accused and the owner of this unit, Sanjay Shah; former excise and prohibition officer Mehul Dodiya; and the other operatives, Rajesh Dodke and Pankaj Vaghela.

Rajesh Dokde and Sunil Kakkad were handling the company’s marketing and production.

The owners of HBG under the guise of a company named AMB secured a dummy loan firm. Through this they floated the product in the market. CO Enterprise in Ahmedabad had the SA 2 licence (Intoxicating spirituous preparations import, export, transport, possession and sales licence) to distribute the syrup across Gujarat.

One of the four absconding, Mehul Dodiya was an excise and prohibition officer, who had raided Shivam Enterprise. This very company made him ⅔ partner. Following which, Dodiya then took voluntary retirement from his post to join Shivam Enterprise as a partner. This was a planned move, say police sources.

The produced syrup was allegedly beyond the 12% permissible alcohol quantity mark.

This syrup  penetrated Saurashtra’s market through local pan shops and was advertised as an alcoholic drink giving “fun”, “current”, and “a kick” to the potential consumers.
