Eight die during garba in Navratri celebrations in Gujarat
Over the first six days of Navratri, the 108 emergency ambulance services received 521 calls for heart-related issues

As the festival of the nine nights is coming to an end, for many garba revellers the enthusiasm came to a fatal end.
As per reports, a total of eight people have died in Gujarat while performing garba during this year’s Navratri celebrations.
A sixth-grader performed garba for two days which allegedly took a toll on his heart. On Oct 21, he suddenly fell while riding his cycle. He was taken to the hospital and was allowed to go home. Once he went to sleep, he did not wake up. When his family members rushed him to the hospital, he was declared dead due to suspected heart failure.
Ahmedabad man dies of heart attack
Two days before this, on Oct 19, a 24-year-old man from Ahmedabad suddenly collapsed while performing garba and died.
Similarly, a 17-year-old boy from Kapadwanj also died while performing garba.
In Surat’s Palsana, Rahul Rathod suddenly fell unconscious while performing garba and was rushed to the Palsana government hospital, where the 23-year-old was declared dead.
Heart attacks among middle-aged
Middle-aged people also fell prey to heart attacks and lost their lives.
A 52-year-old Shankar Rana, a resident of the Harni area in Vadodara, felt uneasy while playing garba. After feeling better for some time, he again joined his wife for garba but suddenly collapsed and died on the spot.
In the Mota Ambala area of Khambhalia, 71-year-old Ravji Kanjariya died of a heart attack. Amit Sanghar, a 31-year-old from the same town, also died due to a heart attack.
In Dwarka, 52-year-old Rajkumar Solanki died of a heart attack.
As per media reports, over the first six days of Navratri, the 108 emergency ambulance services received 521 calls for heart-related issues and an additional 609 calls for breathlessness. These calls were recorded between 6 p.m. and 2 a.m. when garba is usually held.
156 deaths due to heart issues
Data shows that the LG Hospital and Shardaben Hospital saw 156 deaths of patients with heart-related issues in nine months (Jan 2023 -Sept 2023).
Out of 4,377 patients admitted to the hospital for heart treatment, 106 died at LG Hospital while 50 died at Shardaben Hospital this year.
