The bail pleas of the three accused, Naresh Rawat, Vishal Thakor, and Sandip Marathe, were dismissed by the Ahmedabad sessions court on Nov 13. The court dismissed the bail pleas keeping the gravity of this case in mind and also to set a precedent over the increasing menace of illegal inhabitants, cattle owners, outlaw bikers, etc.

The court also noted that the three accused are history sheeters, with approximately seven cases registered against Rawat and four against Thakor, while Marathe was previously arrested in a murder case.

Zone-4 deputy commissioner of police (DCP) of Ahmedabad police have arrested five accused namely Kanu Thakor, Naresh Rawat, Ankit Thakor, Jagdish Jhala, and Sandip Marathe.

Shahibag police have booked the accused for the crime of attempt to cupable homicide, rioting, and assaulting or obstructing public servant when suppressing riot.

The deputy municipal commissioner (DyMC) of the central zone, Ramya Bhatt, was assaulted on duty by the mob in the city’s Asarwa area on Oct 25, when he was on a demolition drive near Civil Hospital in Asarwa.

Bhatt and his team were removing the illegal encroachments on Gujarat high court’s order.

The incident took place late on the evening of Oct 25 when the senior official and his team went to remove illegal encroachments by food and tea stalls near Asarwa Civil Hospital Gate no 3, Jahangirpura Road.

Despite the notices issued to vendors ahead of the drive, they did not move from the site. The Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) officials tried to talk it through and convince them to remove their carts, but a mob including local vendors and some alleged anti-social elements gathered, and attacked the DyMC and his team.

An assault on officials

Around 25-30 people began to thrash the officer and the other few workers of the team using iron rods and other heavy weapons, say sources.

In viral pictures circulating on various social media platforms, Bhatt’s  face could be seen drenched in blood from injuries on his head. Bhatt was then rushed to Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel (SVP) hospital due to severe injuries to the head.

The resident medical officer (RMO) at the hospital said, “DyMC Ramya Bhatt was sent for a CT scan due to a severe injury to the head; the treatment is underway. The team of neurosurgeons was also called for further treatment of the injury.”

Risky job for AMC?

When on one hand this incident occurred with the officials of central zone, on the other hand, the south zone AMC team led by the assistant municipal commissioner had to flee from the spot as the locals started stone-pelting on the on-duty officials.
