Dusty winds, unseasonal rainfall, hailstorm take over heat-torn Gujarat

Sudden gusty winds, dropped visibility, light to moderate rain showers, and hailstorms led to an apocalypse-esque situation in Gujarat.

After a windy atmosphere, at around 5–6 pm, areas in Ahmedabad, including Navrangpura, Motera, Shahpur, Gomtipur, Hanspura, Dahegam, Kubernagar, SG Highway, and Ghotlodiya received rainfall with thunderstorms.

Due to a western disturbance, a drastic change in weather was reported in 21 talukas of the state on May 13.

After boiling temperatures in the city till noon on May 13, Ahmedabad witnessed dusty winds with 40 kmph intensity. The visibility dropped, posing a difficulty for commuters.

On May 13, the average temperature of the city was 42.4°C. Pitch dark clouds conquered the skies of the city with 40–60 kmph gusty winds.

More rain predicted

According to the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD), Ahmedabad is likely to witness rainfall on May 14-15.

After a brief rainy pause, temperatures are likely to rise on May 16.

Today, Ahmedabad’s temperature is likely to drop to 38°C across the day, 42°C on May 15 and May 16, 43°C on May 17, and 42°C on May 18.

A light thunderstorm with lightning and light rain is very likely today in Daman, Dadara & Nagar Haveli, Surendranagar, Rajkot, Junagadh, Amreli, Bhavnagar, Morbi, Gir Somnath, Botad and in Diu, as per IMD.

Which flight schedules were disrupted?

Due to the sudden change in the atmosphere, wind intensity and low visibility, a total of three Ahmedabad-bound flights were diverted.

A total of 15 flights were delayed for over an hour due to weather in Ahmedabad.

Rainfall diaries

Narmada district’s Garudeshwar village in Nandod taluka received the highest rainfall with 1.5 inches, while Surendranagar’s Sayla clocked 1 inch. Botad-Navsari, Vansda, and Surendranagar’s Chotila received less than an inch of rainfall on May 13.

While mobile towers were reported to have fallen in Sector-26, Gandhinagar, over five trees reportedly fell in Ahmedabad.

In Valsad, around 15 trees and an electricity pole fell due to heavy winds. Saurashtra’s Bhavnagar district also witnessed a hailstorm on May 13.
